About the AEMC
The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is Australia's independent rule maker and adviser for the National Electricity Market, natural gas markets and related retail markets. It facilitates energy rule changes, carries out reviews and provides the nation’s Energy Ministers with advice on the design of regulatory and energy market arrangements.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Adviser to join our Economics and System Security (ESS) policy team.
As a Senior Adviser you will lead and manage complex projects to deliver advice, reviews and/or rule changes that support the achievement of AEMC’s strategic objectives. As a member of the ESS team you will work on reforms that aim to promote system security in the electricity sector, where you will apply your knowledge of these issues and the related technical concepts. This is a unique role where you will be engaging with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to develop and deliver evidence-based recommendations on policy, economic and technical solutions to the Chief Executive and Commission.
Key Accountabilities
As a Senior Adviser, leading project teams your work will include:
- Leading and managing multiple projects including undertaking project planning, budgeting, and review and monitoring, to ensure project delivery in line with established strategic direction, project objectives, quality standards and regulatory frameworks; including selecting, engaging and managing external consultants to achieve project deliverables
- Working to solve complex problems - conducting research and analysis to formulate evidence-based recommendations and advice on market development issues
- Engaging with a wide range of stakeholders to facilitate the exchange of information in relation to large and complex projects, including industry organisations and groups, regulatory bodies, government, consultants, and consumers
- Representing the AEMC on technical industry forums and keeping abreast of developments to support our prioritisation and strategy for technical reforms proposed by stakeholders
- Preparing detailed reports and rule change determinations and collaborating with colleagues to deliver sound policy outcomes
- Guiding and coaching Advisers and Graduate Advisers to support learning capability and growth
We are seeking candidates who have:
- Knowledge and understanding of energy and the NEM (National Electricity Market) and/or east-coast gas markets, including knowledge of wholesale system security issues and related technical concepts for example technical access standards, frequency, and system strength.
- A minimum of 7 years’ policy development or regulatory experience in a range of sectors such as industry, consulting, or the public sector, in specialist policy, research, or regulatory roles
- Tertiary qualifications in science or any type of engineering discipline with the ability to apply your skills in a regulatory / policy environment
- Demonstrated project management skills including the ability to lead, plan and deliver multiple complex projects within specified budgetary and time parameters
- Experience in applying critical thinking skills to solve complex policy problems
- Strong stakeholder engagement experience with the ability to establish effective working relationships, relay complex issues in an accessible way and engage meaningfully in issues discussions
- High-level verbal and written communication skills to develop, review and present information and reports in a range of forums
- Strong analytical capability and innovative problem-solving
