About the AEMC

The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is the independent rule maker and adviser for the National Electricity Market, natural gas markets, and related retail markets. We make energy rules, conduct reviews, and advise the nation’s Energy Ministers on regulatory and market design.

The AEMC is shaping market settings to improve Australia’s future productivity and living standards by contributing to a decarbonised, affordable and reliable energy system.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a Lawyer to join our in-house legal team to provide legal and governance services to the Commission.

 

About the Role

As a Lawyer, you will work under the guidance of senior members of the legal team. The role will include:

  • Assisting project teams on rule changes and reviews by drafting and reviewing amendments to the national energy rules in accordance with energy laws and the Commission’s policy directions.
  • Providing legal advice and perspectives to support the Commission’s decision-making on policy matters.
  • Supporting governance and operational functions of the AEMC.
  • Conducting legal reviews of briefings and decision-making documents to ensure compliance.
  • Delivering broader in-house legal support, including procurement, policies and procedures, audit and risk, and compliance programs.

 

About You

You are passionate about delivering high-quality legal advice and enjoy working on a wide range of challenging projects. You thrive in a collaborative environment and enjoy tackling complex problems with creativity and teamwork.

To be successful, you’ll bring:

  • 1 to 3 years’ post-admission experience.
  • Experience in providing written and oral legal advice in areas such as statutory interpretation, administrative law, climate change policy and regulation, or corporate governance.
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, the national regulatory arrangements for the electricity and gas sectors.
  • Experience in infrastructure or government (beneficial but not essential).
  • Strong communication, project management and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A flexible and innovative approach to problem-solving, considering diverse views and requirements.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a close team environment.
  • Analytical skills and the ability to quickly understand complex subject matter.
  • Applicants must have permanent working rights in Australia (either permanent residency or Australian citizenship).
