The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is an independent rule maker and adviser for the National Electricity Market, natural gas market and related retail markets. It facilitates rule changes, carries out reviews and advises the nation’s Energy Ministers on regulatory and energy market design.

About the Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to provide high-quality and actionable advice on economic issues affecting energy markets.
Support policy decisions and the AEMC’s strategic priorities by influencing and contributing to evidence-based policy.
Identify and analyse policy issues and solutions to provide recommendations for solving real-world problems.
As a Senior Adviser you will lead and manage complex projects to deliver advice, reviews and/or rule changes that support the achievement of AEMC’s strategic objectives.
As a member of the Networks and Technical policy team you will work on reforms that support efficient economic regulation of network infrastructure, improved network planning and the integration of consumer energy resources into the energy system – contributing to the transition to a net-zero energy system
This is a unique role where you will engage with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to develop and deliver evidence-based recommendations on policy, economic and technical solutions to the Commission.
Key Accountabilities:
As a Senior Adviser, working in project teams, your work will include:
- Deliver projects (rule changes) and parts of projects (reviews) to support the provision of accurate advice and policy recommendations.
- Lead and/or participate in meetings and workshops with internal and external stakeholders including industry organisations and groups, regulatory bodies, government, consultants, and consumers to develop relationships and facilitate the exchange of information to support effective project outcomes.
- Undertake rigorous analysis and problem-solving from research and stakeholder engagement to deliver detailed, evidence-based and timely written and verbal advice on policy issues.
- Prepare, and contribute to, detailed and clear reports and rule determinations and collaborate with colleagues to deliver sound policy outcomes.
We are looking for candidates with:
- At least 4 years of policy development or regulatory experience.
- Experience with energy systems, particularly the National Electricity Market (NEM) and east-coast gas markets, would be beneficial. Alternatively, a background in transferable policy areas such as water, transport, consulting, or policy would also be advantageous.
- Tertiary qualifications in economics, engineering, commerce, law or other relevant disciplines
- Flexible and innovative problem-solving skills
- High-level verbal and written communication skills to develop, review and present information and reports in a range of forums
- Strong analytical capability with the ability to understand complex subject matters quickly
- Proven ability to work independently whilst also be a strong team player
