About the Opportunity
This is an exciting opportunity to:
- Contribute to high-quality evidence-based rule changes and reviews, providing expert technical advice and recommendations to the Commission, Executive and project teams.
- Deliver specialist power systems engineering depth on transition-critical topics – particularly related to integration of inverter-based resources - to support defensible, technically sound regulatory decisions.
- Contribute to building internal technical capabilities, enhancing the engineering knowledge of AEMC staff and the quality of policy decision-making.
As the Power Systems Engineering Manager you will:
- Provide technical advice and assurance for reviews and/or rule changes.
- Contribute to internal technical capability uplift, including coaching and training.
- Help to build the AEMC’s reputation as a technically credible and engaged regulator.
- Identify and provide briefings on emerging technical risks and opportunities relevant to the AEMC’s priorities and work program.
This is a unique role where you will engage with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders as well as developing and delivering evidence-based technical advice and proposed solutions, directly impacting changes to the national electricity rules.
Key Accountabilities:
As the Power Systems Engineering Manager your work will include:
- Providing power systems engineering advice to Commissioners, executive leadership and project teams, including interpreting and critiquing complex technical issues.
- Developing and applying analytical frameworks to identify, frame and resolve energy rule gaps.
- Critically reviewing key external technical reports and advice.
- Building the AEMC’s internal technical capability by contributing to staff training, supporting due diligence on consultant and policy team outputs, maintaining reusable technical artefacts, and coaching other staff.
- Communicating complex technical issues clearly through presentations, reports, briefings and public-facing materials tailored to a range of audiences, including Commissioners, staff, consumers, journalists, industry participants and government
- Contributing to AEMC technical strategy and thought leadership by tracking key publications, interpreting emerging system risks and opportunities, and synthesising implications for rule-making and review functions.
- Building and maintaining effective internal and external relationships, model constructive leadership behaviours, support knowledge sharing and capability development, and perform duties consistently with AEMC’s statutory obligations, policies, mission, vision and values.
We are looking for candidates with:
- Substantial experience in power systems engineering roles related to the connection to, and operation of, transmission systems with high penetrations of inverter-based resources (IBR).
- Up-to-date expertise in power systems security, including system strength, inertia, frequency control, voltage stability, harmonics, protection systems and the behaviour of inverter-based resources (IBRs) in high-renewables environments.
- Familiarity with consumer energy resources (CER) integration challenges, including minimum system load, distributed PV, battery energy storage and the National CER Roadmap regulatory framework.
- Demonstrated strategic decision-making ability, flexibility and foresight with proven ability to work autonomously under minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to explain complex power engineering concepts to non-technical audiences in ways that are easy to understand and maximise practical relevance to decision-making.
- Proven ability to interpret, analyse and explain complex technical data, information and models in an easy to understand manner.
- Tertiary qualifications in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline, with a focus on power systems.
