Reliability Panel appointments

The AEMC is in the process of filling two positions on the panel.

The AEMC is seeking nominations for a Generator and end use customer representative to the Reliability Panel
The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC or Commission) is conducting a process to appoint the following positions on the Reliability Panel:

  • Generator representative
  • end use customer representative

Under clause 8.8.2 of the NER , the Panel must include a person representing Generators and a person representing the interests of end-use customers for electricity. As the terms of the current members will expire in June 2026, the AEMC is commencing the appointment process for these positions.

The Commission will run the processes to appoint a generator and end-use customer representative separately, however under parallel timelines

The Commission is undertaking two separate two-stage processes to appoint a person representing Generators and a person representing end use customers.

The Commission is currently undertaking the first stage of this process by contacting Generators and representative groups of end-use customers to seek nominations of candidates.

In the second stage of the process the Commission will separately seek feedback from Generators and end-use customers on the nominated candidates.

Generator nominee feedback process

Following receipt of nominations for a Generator representative, the Commission will again write to all Generators, inviting them to indicate a preference for one or more of the nominees received. The Commission may only appoint a person to represent Generators on the Panel if they have received the approval of at least one third of the registered class of participants that the individual would represent (in this case, Generators).

End use nominee feedback process

Following receipt of nominations for an end use customer representative, the Commission will again write to all end use customer groups, inviting feedback on the nominated candidates. The Commission will consider and take into account the feedback consulted in making its appointment for this role.

Overview of the Reliability Panel

The Reliability Panel forms part of the AEMC’s institutional arrangements and has detailed functions and powers conferred on it within the National Electricity Law (NEL).

It is the responsibility of the Reliability Panel to monitor, review and report on the safety, security and reliability of the national electricity system, plus perform any other functions or powers under the NEL or National Electricity Rules (NER).

The Panel is comprised of members who represent a range of participants in the National Electricity Market, including small and large consumers, generators, network businesses, retailers and the Australian Energy Market Operator.

The Panel determines the standards and some of the guidelines used by AEMO and other market participants that help to maintain a secure and reliable power system for consumers.
