The NSW Gas Network (otherwise known as Jemena Gas Network (JGN)) is a distribution pipeline owned and operated by Jemena Gas Networks (NSW) Ltd. Singapore Power (the former parent company of Jemena) purchased the NSW Gas Network from Alinta in 2007, who in turn acquired the network in an asset swap with AGL in 2006. AGL owned and operated the network from when it was first established in Sydney in 1837. Since then the network has grown to service most of the major population centres in NSW (including Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong and regional centres in the Central Tablelands, Central West, Southern Tablelands and Riverina areas). The network consists of approximately 23,800 km of pipeline and services approximately 1,000,000 customers.
The NSW Gas Network is connected to the Moomba to Sydney Pipeline and the Eastern Gas Pipeline where gas is sourced from the Cooper Basin, Bowen/Surat Basins and Gippsland Basin respectively. The network includes two transmission pipelines known as the Wilton to Newcastle trunk pipeline (the ‘northern trunk’) and the Wilton to Wollongong trunk pipeline (the ‘southern trunk’). These two trunk pipelines were reclassified by the National Competition Council (NCC) to be part of the NSW Gas Network in June 2009. The network also includes the distribution pipeline known as the Central West Distribution System.
The NSW Gas Network previously included the South West Slopes and Temora gas distribution networks in southern NSW. In 2003, these two networks had their coverage revoked after being sold to Country Energy. In 2010, Country Energy sold these two networks along with other gas networks that it owned, to Envestra. Envestra outsources the operation of its gas networks to the APA Group.
The NSW Gas Network was initially subject to regulation by IPART under the Gas Supply Act 1996 (NSW). IPART continued to regulate the pipeline under the Gas Code. It is now subject to full regulation by the AER under the NGR.
